Copter rotor project takes off

LIVERPOOL university will help shape the future of flight by developing an £8.8m helicopter blade.

The university will research and develop a new blade to provide maximum performance.

The three-year £8.8m project will see Liverpool work with Bristol and Leicester universities on the development of rotor blades, active hydraulic systems and rotor control.

Science and Innovation Minister, Ian Pearson, announced the collaboration yesterday as part of the Rotor Embedded Actuator Control Technology (React) project.

The project will involve full laboratory assessments of the technology, and will help develop manufacturing methods to produce the innovative technology en masse.

Mr Pearson said: “I am very pleased the Technology Strategy Board is providing the public sector support for React, ensuring that much of this crucial research and development is UK-led.

“React is a great example of industry, academia and government working together.”
