Book of condolence opened for homophobic attack victim

A BOOK of condolence for Michael Causer, who died after a homophobic attack, is to be opened at Liverpool Town Hall.

The book will be available for people to sign during normal office hours in the Council Chamber from 12.30pm today.

Michael’s family is supporting the move and Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Steve Rotheram, will be the first signatory on behalf of the people of Liverpool.

He said: “This is a way in which we can convey our sympathy to Michael’s parents, family and friends.

“Liverpool is a community that is proud of its diversity, and we will not tolerate hatred or violence. I share the feeling of the overwhelming majority of citizens of the city who stand united in our condemnation of the homophobia and violence.”

Religious leaders are also being urged to come out in condemnation of the attack.

Liverpool’s Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual and Transgender Network wants church leaders and members of all faith groups to speak out.

A vigil is to be held in St John’s Gardens and Knowsley has opened several books of condolence at council one-stop shops in Huyton, Kirkby, Prescot and Halewood, and also Whiston library.

Michael, 18, was attacked in premises in Huyton and was left suffering critical injuries on the side of Tarbock Road on Friday, July 25.

He died in hospital eight days later, sparking widespread outrage and condolences from family, friends and supporters..
