Driver fights for life after car smashes into house

A DRIVER sustained life-threatening injuries after colliding with a house on a Wirral street.

The male, who has not been named, was rushed to hospital after the BMW he was driving hit a semi-detached house on Ford Road, Upton, at 10.50pm on Saturday.

Three other people in the car were seen running away in the direction of Upton.

The vehicle spun around after hitting the house, and the driver was thrown from the car.

Residents said last night they would fight to have traffic calming measures installed on the road, since four properties have been hit on the street by vehicles in the past eight years.

The occupier of the property involved in the collision, who did not want to be named, said: “I was asleep and woke up – I must have heard the noise. My husband said ‘that was a big bang’, so we came down to have a look.

“There were car parts all over the road and the car was facing the opposite direction to the house.

“It is not the first time this has happened – three other houses have been hit, the last one about 12 months ago.”

Another resident said his house was hit in an almost identical accident eight years ago. His porch area was destroyed and had to be rebuilt.

A Merseyside police spokesman said: “The BMW left the road and collided with a dwelling. The occupier of the vehicle was ejected from the car, suffering life- threatening injuries.

“Three further occupants ran away in the general direction of Upton.”

Police are appealing for witnesses, and anyone who can identify the people running away should contact 0151 7775771.
