Rail enthusiasts chuffed as golden age of steam returns to Lime Street
FORMER London Midland and Scottish Railway steam locomotive Princess Elizabeth passed through Earlestown shortly after leaving Liverpool’s Lime Steet en route to North Wales yesterday, marking the 40th anniversary of the end of steam.
Steam trains were banned 40 years ago by British railways, but have enjoyed a triumphant return to Liverpool over the past month, organised by Claire Rider, of National Museums Liverpool.
The Walker Art Gallery currently has a highly successful exhibition, The Age of Steam.
The result is that, for the first time in decades, Liverpool passengers can travel directly to North Wales and Carlisle on return steam-driven services.
