Militant MP Terry Fields to be remembered fondly by colleagues

Militant MP Terry Fields to be remembered fondly by colleagues

A SPECIAL meeting will be held next week to commemorate the life of former Liver-pool Militant MP Terry Fields, who died in June.

The left-winger, who represented Liverpool Broadgreen from 1983 to 1992, and was famously jailed for non-payment of poll tax, died following a short battle with cancer.

The Campaign for a New Workers’ Party (CNWP) is holding the meeting at the Adelphi Hotel, Lime Street, on Wednesday, August 27, at 7.30pm.

Tony Mulhearn, spokesman for CNWP, friend of Terry, and former president of the Liverpool Labour party, said: “The meeting is dedicated to celebrate Terry's life, which was committed to representing the working class and any community in struggle for justice.

“His outlook was anchored to his belief that only in a Socialist society can the problems of workers be permanently resolved.

“His election slogan ofŠ 'A Workers' MP on a Worker's Wage' was translated into concrete reality, and it is a slogan which will resonate among working people who are looking for a true leader and an inspiration to young workers looking for an alternative to the appalling features of capitalism with which we are surrounded.”

The meeting will be addressed by Matt Wrack, Fire Brigades Union General Secre-tary and former Militant figures Peter Taaffe and Dave Nellist.
