THE Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt Rev James Jones, paid tribute to the creativity and variety on show at the Southport Flower Show.
Ladies Day yesterday was a festival of hats and sunshine, but the bishop chose to focus on the horticultural talents.
Speaking to VIPs that included mayors from across Merseyside and landscape designers, he said: “This is my first visit to Southport Flower Show and I can’t believe how much I’ve been missing.
“It’s been marvellous to see the replica Liverpool Cathedral and the Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral here. I’m so impressed with the creativity and talent I’ve seen here.”
He pointed to Thorn Cross Young Offenders Institution’s entry to the bedding plant competition as an example of the importance the show had for Merseyside.
This category was won by Sefton Council which based its effort on the theme of heritage.
The flower show has also focused attention on the plight of the bumblebee.
An exhibit featuring live honeybees shows interested gardeners how to handle the insects and life inside a working beehive.
