Drunken woman carried to van by seven police officers

A DRUNKEN woman had to be carried into a police van by seven officers after being challenged over the noise coming from her flat.

Police were called to York Terrace, Everton, by neighbours disturbed by the commotion.

But Liverpool Crown Court heard that when Shirley Byrne came to the door she was immediately abusive, shouting and swearing.

Geoffrey Fryar, prosecu- ting, told how when one officer tried to enter the house the 38-year-old punched her in the arm.

Alarmed by the sight of a large knife on the floor, she called for back-up.

Mr Fryar said: "Seven officers attended. There was a struggle and event- ually she was removed and physically carried from the flat."

Despite being changed into a paper suit and put in a cell at the station, Byrne then produced a razor blade and threatened to cut herself.

It took several officers to disarm the drug addict, who has a previous convic- tion for slashing a man and woman with a knife.

Byrne later admitted affray and common assault, but she was given a second chance yesterday.

Judge David Boulton suspended a year prison- sentence for two years after learning she had a "dysfunctional personal- ity", and imposed an 18- months supervision order., Judge Boulton said: "What I want to do, if I can is to make you a decent citizen out of you."
