GARSTON MP Maria Eagle last night called on Liverpool City Council to resume “normal service” at a south Liverpool leisure centre, after its opening hours were shortened following budget cuts.
The doors to the swimming pool at Austin Rawlinson Sports Centre once opened at 8am, but now the pool only opens at noon.
Ms Eagle said: “The Austin Rawlinson Centre is the only facility of its kind in Speke. It gives residents somewhere to go and exercise. It is well used and much valued by local people, so I find it simply unacceptable for Liverpool City Council to target it with cuts.
“The people of Speke deserve better, so I am calling on the city council to resume normal service immediately.”
A council spokesman said: “The centre is open in the morning for organised group sessions.
“This reflects the current demand, and is subject to continual review and change as necessary.
“We do extend the opening hours where appropriate, for example during school holidays.”
