Policemen in court on death crash charge

TWO policemen driving at speeds of up to and over 100mph were responsible for the death of a former Liverpool University academic, a court was told today.

PCs Sean Schofield, 38, and Andrew Massingham, 41, were on a training exercise on November 2, 2006, testing equipment that is designed to catch speeding motorists.

However PC Schofield, who was driving behind his instructor PC Massingham, lost control at high-speed on a country road near Kirkby Lonsdale, Lancashire.

He crashed into the car being driven by grandfather Peter Williams, who died the following day from his injuries.

Mr Williams, 67, grew up in Liverpool’s Orrell Park area and was educated at Rice Lane primary school and Warbreck secondary modern in Aintree. He worked at Bryant and May's match factory before joining Liverpool University.

Both officers, who serve with Lancashire Police, have pleaded not guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

The case continues and is expected to last two weeks.
