World’s tallest skyscraper could top 1km

PLANS to construct what could become the world’s tallest building, at more than 1km high, were unveiled yesterday.

Dubai developer Nakheel – the company that created man-made islands in the shapes of a palm tree and the Earth – said the structure will be the centre-piece of an inner-city harbour set to become the emirate’s new, unofficial capital.

Festival tickets sell in advance

GLASTONBURY Festival organisers said last night they were “pretty chuffed” after half the tickets for next year’s event were sold or reserved, eight months in advance.

Tickets for the regular music and arts jamboree in Somerset went on sale yesterday at 9am.

War hero dies

TED BRIGGS, the last survivor of the sinking of the battle cruiser HMS Hood by the Bismarck in 1941, has died. Mr Briggs, 85, from Fareham, in Hampshire, was one of only three men of a crew of 1,418 who survived the attack by the Nazi ship.

Fire ‘accidental’

THE death of two young brothers in a house fire was likely to have been a “tragic accident”, police said. The youngsters, seven-year-old Lewis and five-year-old Taylor Jenkins, were found by firefighters yesterday as they tackled a blaze at their home in Eastbourne, East Sussex.

AMERICAN pop singer Pink has emerged victorious over British rockers Oasis by claiming a number one single.

Oasis could only secure third place in what was being tipped as a close-run contest for the top spot.
