Mr Brown also used the meeting to tell MPs that the Glenrothes by-election will be held on November 6.

The by-election represents another difficult test for Mr Brown after the loss of Glasgow East in July – where the Scottish National Party overturned a 13,000 Labour majority – which sparked talk of a leadership challenge.

Mr Brown, who represents the neighbouring Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath constituency, was said by aides to be keen to campaign in the seat, although a decision will depend on the state of the global economy.
