Charity bike ride thank-you to hospital
A MAN who suffered a heart attack in a Cheshire bike shop has been raising money for the hospital that treated him – by going on a 174-mile cycle ride.
John Mosinski, 50, from Chester, completed the Hadrian’s Cycleway from Ravenglass in Cumbria to South Shields last week – seven months after he was admitted to the Countess of Chester Hospital.
The keen cyclist stopped off at The Edge Cycleworks, Chester, in March, when he suffered chest pains.
Staff at the shop took him to a doctor, who said he had suffered from a heart attack.
He then spent nine nights on the Coronary Care Unit at the Countess of Chester, followed by a 12-week cardiac rehab programme, and is now raising funds for the ward.
Mr Mosinski, who lives in Newton, said: “I took some time off work in March to get fit for the start of the cycling season.
“I called into The Edge to get some supplies, but was taken ill and two of the staff members bundled me into a car to go to the doctors.
“It turned out I was having a heart attack.
“The team at the Countess were fantastic and I want to repay them.” The British Aerospace worker was also operated on at Broadgreen Hospital, where he had an angioplasty, a procedure which helps to improve the blood supply to the heart muscle. He then spent 19 weeks recovering at home.
His employers are now planning to match whatever he earns in sponsorship.
He said: “The ride went well and took about two and half days in total.
“My wife, Yvonne, has also been very supportive and family in Australia have got in touch to support me.
“I cannot thank staff at the Edge Cycleworks enough either, I don’t know how I would have got to a doctor without them.”
