A SUPERMARKET chain has donated £1m to Alder Hey Hospital for vital equipment and research.

Deeside-based Iceland has been fundraising for the hospital throughout the year, with sponsored events all over the country.

The cheque was presented to Liverpool FC’s manager, Rafael Benitez and wife Montse, both strong supporters of the hos- pital, on Tuesday dur- ing Iceland’s annual retail conference at THE ACC Liverpool.

Louise Shepherd, chief executive of Alder Hey, said: “We are overwhelmed by the generosity of Iceland who have been supporting Alder Hey for many years.

“When they began this campaign we never dreamt it would reach £1m – an unbelievable total in the current climate.

“Amazingly, they haven’t stopped there and are hosting a dinner this weekend and a ball in St George’s Hall next March – we can’t thank them enough.”

The money will go towards the hospital’s Imagine Appeal, launched in October 2005, with the support of Yoko Ono.Š John Lennon’s lyrics in the song Imagine, and a pencil drawing by him are used in the campaign, which carries the slogan Living For Today, Giving For Tomorrow.
