SOME of the biggest names in show jumping went head to head in Liverpool last night in the grand final of an international three-day event.

Among the greats at Aintree were Robert Smith, son of former Olympic show jumper Harvey Smith, Ellen Whitaker and Geoff Billington.

The three-day competition at Aintree International Equestrian Centre in the grounds of Aintree Racecourse, saw about 150 horses take part each day.

Jo McGlory, 28, from Lydiate, joined the high profile ensemble.

She said: “It’s an inspiring location and has been a great few days, not just for the riders but for the people watching too – it’s always special to watch this level of jumping and was a great free family day out.”

Some of the jumps measured 1.4m – just under Olympic standard which measure 1.6m.

Grand National finale yesterday pitted the top 40 horses over the three- day event for the ultimate prize fund of nearly £10,000.
