Pipe to be replaced to stop Huyton flooding

AN OLD cast-iron water pipe that caused flooding in Huyton is to be replaced.

A £7m investment by United Utilities will renew a 4.4m stretch of the pipe between Knowsley and Liverpool. The 44-inch pipe runs from Liverpool Road, Prescot, into Dovecot Parade, Liverpool, and has burst twice in the past year.

Work is set to start at the end of the month for completion by July/August next year.

Work starts on Dream art

WORK has started on the site where a 60ft high elongated face will stand in St Helens. Major preparations have started on Sutton Manor Colliery where the iconic artwork of artist Jaume Plensa will sit. “Dream” has been commissioned by St Helens Council as part of the Big Art Project, an ambitious public art initiative from Channel 4.

Father bailed

THE father of a 19-year-old woman whose remains were found in woodland in a seaside town was released on bail last night. Children playing in Redgeland Wood, in the Queensway area of Hastings, East Sussex, found a skull last Monday and further human remains were later found around the scene. Medical records were used to identify Victoria Couchman, a single mother who lived with her father, Tony Couchman, about a mile from the woodland. Mr Couchman, 45, was arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday and has been released on conditional bail to return to Eastbourne Custody Centre on November 17.

Six killed

SIX people were killed and seven others injured in an arson and stabbing spree in South Korea, allegedly by a man said to be financially distressed. Police said they arrested the 31-year-old suspect, identified only by his surname, Jeong, at the scene. Officers said Jeong first set fire to his room in southern Seoul and stabbed other residents while fleeing the blaze.
