Tributes to former Widnes and Great Britain rugby league star killed on M6

FORMER Widnes and Great Britain rugby league star player David Myers has been killed in an accident on the M6, Cheshire.

The Warrington-based 37-year-old died when his van hit a bridge support on the M6 on Monday night. The incident happened 90 minutes before another crash killed six people on the same motorway.

Myers was also renowned at Wigan for scoring a try in the club’s Challenge Cup final win over St Helens in 1991.

The winger also had two spells at Widnes, including a memorable Challenge Cup semi-final appearance, as well as a few appearances for Warrington.

Widnes Vikings operations manager Pat Cluskey said: “David was a popular member of the Widnes team and will no doubt be remem-bered by many for his celebration as Widnes beat Leeds in the 1993 Challenge Cup semi-final at Central Park.

“The side's per-formance that day was straight out of the textbook and one that was worthy of winning a place at Wembley.”

Myers also had spells at Bradford and Salford and play-ed for Widnes RUFC too. He toured with Great Britain in 1992.

Wigan Warriors performance director, Joe Lydon, paid tribute to his ex-team-mate: “David and I played in the same Wigan team in the early 1990s.

“It is such a tragedy to learn about this news and my thoughts are with his family. Everyone at the club would like to pass on their deepest sympathies and condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.”

A spokesperson for Warrington said: ``Everyone at Warrington Wolves sends their condolences to his family and friends at this very sad time.

“David made six appearances for the Wire in the 1989-1990 season after signing from Widnes.”

Fans have also spoken of their sadness on various internet forums.
