Petrenko takes musical children to Commons

SEVEN Kensington schoolchildren, their double basses and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic conductor Vasily Petrenko will be visiting Parliament on Tuesday to talk about the award-winning Music For Life programme.

Launched in 2003, the scheme encourages music making through instrumental training, and the usually unpopular double bass has emerged as a firm favourite with the youngsters involved.

Its success has spread beyond creating aspiring musicians, and has been shown to improve the cultural knowledge, academic performance and social skills of those youngsters involved.

Joining the children will be the Phil’s principal conductor Mr Petrenko and Wavertree MP Jane Kennedy, who will then introduce the entourage to whole host of other dignitaries including culture secretary Andy Burnham at a special reception held in their honour.

Mr Petrenko said: “I am proud of the significance that the Liverpool Phil places on working with communities to encourage music-making, and in particular in involving children and young people in music at the earliest opportunity.’’
