Jockeys of the future show off their skills at Aintree

THE top 30 racing ponies and riders in the country battled it out in the prestigious 2008 Charles Owen Pony Racing Finals, at Aintree Racecourse, on Saturday.

Riders have competed in a series of 20 pony races since April to secure a place in each category (138cm and under and 148cm and under) at Aintree, which hosts the annual finals at its opening meeting of the 2008/2009 season.

Many of the riders, aged 11 to 15, are set to pursue a professional career in the saddle. Being crowned 2008 Charles Owen Pony Racing Champion is the perfect stepping stone.

Hector Worsley won the 138cm and under Charles Owen Pony Race Finals on Goldsborough Moonlight Mist.

Becky Brisbane was the champion in the 148cm and under class.

Rebecca Morgan, chief executive of The Pony Racing Authority, said: “In such a short time, pony racing has developed phenomenally.

“The standard of riding is astounding; many of the riders already look like profes- sional jockeys.

“It’s great for the riders to be given the opportunity to ride on a grade one track. A lot of the crowd stayed on to cheer them on like it was any other race.”
