SEFTON’S Cllr Jack Colbert met Obama in Indianapolis during the primary race earlier this year. Cllr Colbert was in the US promoting the World Firefighter Games when the pair met in a hotel lobby.
Cllr Colbert said: “I asked him if he becomes President, would he visit Liverpool. He said ‘Certainly, if you write to me’.
“He was surrounded by Secret Service – like something out of a Clint Eastwood film. He was so down to earth and real. There was an order about him. I think it’s fantastic, it will change the world. I hope he can deliver what he says he can.”
Cllr Colbert, who has four mixed-race children – one of whom will journey to Iraq to fight in a fortnight – added: “I don’t think we will see a black Prime Minister in my lifetime. It’s very hard in this country to get on.”
He urged the incoming president to “get rid of Guantanamo Bay and stop going to war on a whim”.
