Delays to continue in search for leak

ONE of Wirral’s busiest roads faces even more disruption this weekend and for several days as gas engineers continue their three-month search for a leak from a mains pipe.

The roadworks have been causing disrup-tion for drivers on the A41 New Chester Road since late July.

Last night, local Cllr Steve Niblock said: “Clearly there is a problem with the gas leak and that needs to be resolved, but yet again traffic will be delayed because of a contraflow.”

Cllr Niblock advised drivers to try to use an alternative route be-hind Croft Retail Park in a bid to avoid delays.

A spokeswoman for National Grid said: “The contraflow is necessary to ensure our engineers have a safe working area.

“National Grid apologises for the inconvenience caused by the work but it is essential that the gas escape is repaired.”

A Wirral Council spokeswoman said: “The contraflow is necessary to ensure the safety of the public and those working on the highway.”
