Merseyside skies light up for Bonfire Night

MERSEYSIDE Fire and Rescue Service last night reported a high volume of calls but no major incidents during Bonfire Night.

An estimated 100,000 spectators turned up to the three organised firework displays held in Liverpool at Sefton, Walton Hall and Newsham parks.

The biggest was at Sefton Park, where around 50,000 people saw a spectacular display choreographed to pop music to mark the MTV Europe Music awards coming to the city.

Council leader Warren Bradley, himself a firefighter, said the attendance figures were considerably up on last year.

He added: “People recognise that organised firework displays are the best to go and see, plus in Liverpool they are free.

“Everyone has enjoyed themselves in a really fun and safe way.”

Other organised displays taking place around the region included several in Wirral, as well as in Kirkby and Halton.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside fire service said most calls had been to put out bonfires, and the service had been at full stretch with not enough fire engines to go out and attend all of them.

A YOUNG woman suffered serious head and arm injuries after a firework exploded in her face last night.

The 29-year-old was rushed to Wrexham Maelor Hospital where she was treated for substantial burns to her head and forearms.

The woman returned to a lit firework which had failed to go off. It then blew up in her face.

She had been at a private fireworks display on the outskirts of Minera, near Wrexham, where she lives. The heat generated by the explosion caused the nylon top she was wearing to cling to her arms, burning phosphorous chemicals into her skin.
