Sneak preview of backstage at the MTV Awards

Backstage at the MTV Awards

BUFFALO wings, Hellmann’s Mayonnaise and plush purple sofas are ready to greet the stars backstage at the MTV Music Awards.

The world’s media was given a tour of VIP areas this morning gaining a look inside the dressing rooms of Estelle, Pink, Kid Rock and the Ting Tings.

Small partition rooms fitted out with comfy sofas and futuristic dome chairs form the three rows of lined dressing rooms in the arena basement.

Surprisingly unglamorous from the outside, the grey carpet-style partitions are covered by a white cloth to form a ceiling.

Inside the female dressing room, alongside the usual bottled water and beer are peanuts, Walkers crisps, giant mega pencil candies and lemon and ginger.

A list of ‘backstage spa’ treatments lying next to a Marilyn Monroe bulb mirror includes a tension relieving muscle scrub and foot and hand massage.

The band’s dressing room follows a red theme with angular PVC finish tables, black straight-back sofas and grey rag rugs.

Next to the Trident chewing gum, PG Tips, water, beer and wine there are loaves of Sainsbury’s white and brown bread next to jars of wholegrain mustard, Branston pickle and Hellmans Mayonnaise.

The security is tight and as we are chaperoned into the Artist Hospitality area, a crew member velcros the names above the dressing room doors.

Kid Rock is next to the Ting Tings, who are next to Pink who’s next to Travis Mccoy of Gym Class Heroes, whose dressing room is opposite that of his girlfriend, Katy Perry.

Kerry Katona, who famously slurred her words on This Morning this month, has her own dressing room as she is being filmed tonight for her own MTV programme.

Sir Paul McCartney, who is being presented with a lifetime achievement award by Bono tonight, has his own dressing room set away from the others near to the artist check-in area.

In keeping with MTV’s hip and young style, the bar and dining area next to the dressing rooms is a colourful mix of graffiti-art and flowers.

With some artwork still being composed in situ, the artwork comes from London based Single and Homeless project (SHP).

More than 250 stars and their entourages including Kanye West ate in the dining room yesterday during rehearsals.

Head chef Dan said he expected to feed 450 people today and only one star had ‘particular dietary requirements’.

With the majority of American stars opting for the American menu, mega-star Beyonce travels with her own nutritionist and has all her food prepared by a private chef.

For the rest of the pack, spicy crab cakes on saffron rice with jalapeno lime mayonnaise are on offer next to soup and chicken buffalo wings with a blue cheese dip.

An English menu of Lancashire sausage with potatoes and an Eastern menu of Teriyaki beef are also served.

Head barman, who calls himself ‘Mole’ said there was no chance of running out of alcohol with pallet loads of beer and spirits bought in.

Sitting on the white leather sofas, Mole said the drinks he is expecting to serve tonight will be the usual gin, rum, tequila, wine and beer.

The next sneak preview was of the famous red carpet complete with that ‘new’ smell and crowd barriers to hold back the screaming fans and paparazzi.

Stars will enter the undercover red carpet through the convention centre and head downstairs to the dressing rooms.

Last stop was a glimpse of where the action will happen, the stage.

As 50 crew began unwrapping the bubble-wrapped lights, the press were told no photographs or panoramic filming ahead of the big show.

It will take the rest of the day to finish the set-up which includes four huge screens and hundreds of hanging blue lights in keeping with those on the red carpet.

The only hint of tonight’s surprises was a giant Katy Pery chapstick hidden backstage.
