Beatles boot camp gives amateur rockers chance to play at Cavern Club

A ROCK ‘n’ roll fantasy camp which gives members a chance to perform alongside their music idols came to Liverpool’s legendary Cavern Club last night.

It was the finale of a week-long Beatles-themed extravaganza which also saw the “campers” play and record at Abbey Road studios in London.

The Beatles’ original drummer, Pete Best, was present last night to talk and answer questions about his memories of playing at the Cavern in the early days with John, Paul and George.

The aspiring musicians were joined on stage by professionals such as Earl Slick, who has played guitar for the likes of David Bowie and John Lennon, among many others.

The idea of the US-based fantasy camp is to give music lovers of all levels of ability the chance to “live the dream” and enjoy a rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle for a week in the company of their music heroes.

The aspiring musicians pay up to £3,000 each to pick up playing techniques and tricks from the professionals.

During the time spent at Abbey Road, tutors included former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman and Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, along with songwriters and producers.

The seven amateur bands were accompanied by professional musicians to perform three Beatles’ songs each on stage at the Cavern last night.

Best, who is currently in the middle of a world tour with his own band, said: “It’s great that it’s finishing up in Liverpool and at the Cavern in particular.

“The energy of the players is absolutely fantastic.

“It’s just like it used to be in the 60s.”
