Liverpool director set for knock-out hit with Joe Calzaghe film

A LIVERPOOL-based production company is set to enjoy its very own knock-out victory after Joe Calzaghe’s stunning win over Roy Jones Jnr in the boxing mecca of New York’s Madison Square Garden on Saturday night.

For the official story of the Welsh boxer’s life has been filmed by Liverpool director Mike Cockayne and put together by his Bold Street-based company Integral Productions.

The team already has a huge hit on their hands with the award-winning story of Ricky Hatton, the best-selling boxing DVD in UK history.

And after Calzaghe maintained his unbeaten record with his victory over Jones, today’s release of Joe Calzaghe – A Life Story could not be better timed by the Liverpool company.

Creating the film involved trips to Wales and Sardinia to trace Joe’s mixed Welsh/Italian roots, as well as interviews with fellow boxing legends such as Jake La Motta – immortalised by Robert De Niro in the film Raging Bull – and Sugar Ray Leonard.

There are also comments from Calzaghe’s Hollywood fan base, including Al Pacino and Sylvester Stallone, who were in Las Vegas to watch the boxer’s first ever fight in the United States earlier this year.
