Cavern Club: Gary Glitter brick stays

LIVERPOOL’S world-famous Cavern Club last night defended its decision not to remove a tribute to convicted sex offender Gary Glitter.

The shamed ex-pop star has his name etched into a brick in the music “Wall of Fame” in Mathew Street, Liverpool.

It fills the front wall of the Cavern pub and carries the name of hundreds of bands that played The Cavern between 1957 and 1973.

Owned by Cavern City Tours, the wall also includes names such as the Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, and Gerry and The Pacemakers.

But despite pressure from a local MP to have the Gary Glitter brick removed, the tour company operators claim it is part of Liverpool history and will remain.

Spokesman for Cavern City Tours and Cavern Club licensee Bill Heckle says the brick should stay, as the wall is a piece of Liverpool history.

Mr Heckle said: “We made a conscious decision to leave the Gary Glitter brick where it is as we see the wall as more like an historical document than a tourist attraction.

“When the Gary Glitter story broke we immediately removed all memorabilia and photos of him from the club without consulting anyone, as we felt this was the right thing to do.

“But he appeared at the Cavern with his Glitter band and we cannot change the past. Their performance is part of Liverpool and its history.

“There is no way we condone anything he has done and leaving the brick in the wall does not support him in any way.”
