Eastern show as Korean culture sets out its city stall

LIVERPOOL continues to show it really is the world in one city with the start of a three-day festival dedicated to the best of Korean culture.

A programme of contemporary film and art, as well as a traditional cultural display will be taking place at venues across the city.

Following on from the success of Korean films such as Oldboy, Fact’s programme starts tonight with a special preview of Kim Ji-woon’s new film, The Good The Bad and The Weird, which will be introduced by the Korean Ambassador to the UK, Chun Yung-woo.

Elsewhere, artist Lee Jinkyung is using space in the Static Gallery in Roscoe Street as a studio and as a shop promoting Korean brand Ssamzie.

“It started in 1984 as a fashion brand and for the last 20 or so years, it has been positively marketing art.”

Lee is not the only Korean artist in town.

Back at Fact, today at 3.30pm there will be a gallery tour and talk by director Mike Stubbs regarding the Biennial work of U-ram Choe, and there is a tour of the Contemporary Korean Art Exhibition at A Foundation on Greenland Street at 11am on Friday by curator Jiyoon Lee.

Kyuhak Choi, the director of the Korean Cultural Centre, said: “It is a great honour for the us to put on a festival.”
