A NEW choral work by the Queen’s Master of Music is receiving its premiere in Liverpool next month, and has been dedicated to Sir Paul McCartney.
A Hymn to the Spirit of Fire, by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, has been commissioned to mark 2008 and will be performed at the Metropolitan Cathedral on December 13. Tickets are now on sale.
The former Beatle has accepted the dedication and will be formally invited to the performance.
One of the greatest and most popular living composers, Sir Peter’s work is expected to draw worldwide attention.
The event has been organised by the Concerts Society at the Cathedral.
Chairman John Moseley said: “We are delighted that Sir Peter agreed to write a special piece of music as part of our contribution to the Capital of Culture festivities.
“This is the first time the Society has embarked on a commission on this scale with such an internationally-renowned composer.
“Sir Peter has kindly agreed to attend the premiere, which I am sure will be a major draw.”
Sir Peter is the Queen’s Master of Music, an honorary position similar to that of Poet Laureate. He has composed pieces for major national occasions, including a new Christmas carol for the Queen in 2007.
A Hymn to the Spirit of Fire will be performed by the Cathedral choir and the Cantata Choir accompanied by organist Richard Lea.
Words are drawn from the 12th- century poems of Saint Hildegard of Bingen, interspersed with the text Veni, Creator Spiritus (Come, Holy Spirit) drawn from the Roman Missal.
Mr Moseley added: “The performance promises to be a wonderful occasion.
“Audiences for our concerts have increased over the last year, as a result of Liverpool’s focus on culture.
“We are expecting this event to be very popular with both classical music lovers and those seeking new experiences.
“In order to make this premiere accessible to all, we have kept the ticket prices low – £7 – and this is a unique opportunity to see and hear a world first.”
