THOUSANDS of trees and shrubs will be delivered this week to a former Merseyside landfill site.
They will be planted by the Forestry Commission, which hopes to create a new beauty spot in time for Christmas.
The £1.78m project is part of the commission’s nationwide Newlands project.
It will transform 26 hectares of disused land, which includes two former landfill sites and unmanaged grasslands at Town Lane, Southport.
The commission will plant a community woodland off Bentham’s Way. It will be made up of 12,000 silver birch, wild cherry, yew, hawthorn and dog rose trees.
Money for the scheme has come from the North West Development Agency and the European Objective 1 fund.
