Welcome back for team who named city European Capital of Culture

FIVE of the judges who awarded Liverpool its 2008 Capital of Culture status have returned to the city to see what is currently on offer.

Chairman of the panel Sir Jeremy Isaacs, Professor Peter Stead, Marc Jordan, Dame Judith Mayhew Jonas and Magnus Linklater are each spending at least two days this week in Liverpool and taking in a variety of theatre, exhibitions and concerts, as well as yesterday visiting the site of the new Museum of Liverpool.

By the end of their visit, they will have attended performances of Pete Postlethwaite in King Lear at the Everyman, “adult fairy tale” Peacock Boy, at the Unity Theatre, a performance from contemporary RLPO offshoot Ensemble 10/10 at St George’s Hall, visited the slavery museum at the Albert Dock and the Le Corbusier exhibition in the crypt of the Metropolitan Cathedral.

Sharon Granville, executive director of the Museum of Liverpool project, said: “The Museum of Liverpool is a landmark project for the city and the key cultural legacy of 2008, so we're really pleased the judges came on site to see the latest developments.”

In June, 2003, when Liverpool was named as 2008 Capital of Culture, Sir Jeremy said: “Liverpool looked good, sounded good, feels good to be in and would deliver a really terrific year.

“If one had to say one thing that swung it for Liverpool, it would have to be there was a greater sense there that the whole city is involved in the bid and behind the bid.”
