Children escape but blazes cause two deaths

Body of a woman was found at a house fire in Birkenhead

TWO people have died in house fires in Merseyside over the weekend.

A woman in her 40s was found dead in a property on Orrets Meadow, Woodchurch, Birkenhead, at 8am on Saturday.

Two children escaped from the blaze and raised the alarm, but, once inside the property, firefighters discovered the woman’s body in a first-floor bedroom.

The two children were taken to hospital.

A spokesman said: “The two children managed to get out and go to a neighbour’s house, when they alerted the fire service, but when we arrived the lady’s body was discovered.”

And a smoke alarm alerted neighbours to a second fire on Woodgreen Road, Old Swan, at 2.30pm.

Firefighters found the body of an elderly man in the front living room, after concerned onlookers raised the alarm.

A spokesman said: “The neighbours were made aware of the blaze by a smoke alarm and tried to enter the house to see if anyone was inside, but they were beaten back by flames and smoke.

“Sadly, when firefighters entered, they found the gentleman’s body.”

Investigations are under way into both incidents, but neither is being treated as suspicious.
