Change informant rules, says Kilfoyle after case

John Haase and Paul Bennett

LIVERPOOL MP Peter Kilfoyle called for rules on informants to be changed last night after two Liverpool supergrasses were jailed for perverting the course of justice.

Mr Kilfoyle said the fact heroin barons John Haase, 59 and Paul Bennett, 44, conned their way to two royal pardons and secured an early release from jail showed the mistake could happen again.

Speaking to the Daily Post last night, he said: “There should be changes in the way informants are dealt with and we should monitor what happens to them.

“I don’t believe the Home Secretary should give remission of a sentence, I believe it should be more than one person making that decision.

“A senior person should be in charge of the investigation and a panel of judges should review the evidence and the investigation before it goes to the Home Secretary.

“In this case the investigation was done by someone quite junior and in future, cases need to be decided by a senior person.

“There are also problems in the system with the police as they are often reliant on the information given by informants.”

Mr Kilfoyle said there were issues surrounding other cases, such as Thomas Burke who was accused of smuggling a gun into Strangeways while he was serving a sentence for two murders.

Mr Kilfoyle believes if Haase and Bennett masterminded a bribing plot behind bars, others could be doing the same and would do in the future.

Haase and Bennett were last week jailed for a total of 42 years for perverting the course of justice.

From their prison cells they organised 35 hauls of firearms and drugs across the UK, told police where they could be found and secured a early release from jail.
