Protesters say no to introduction of ID cards for foreign students

LIVERPOOL students protested against ID cards for international students yesterday.

Members of Liverpool’s Guild of Students joined union members from Manchester University and lobby group “Say No To ID Cards” to protest outside the Home Office, in Water Street.

Waving banners saying “Nothing to hide but nothing to prove” the students wore bar codes round their necks and denounced the move as an attack on civil liberties.

From yesterday, all international students renewing a visa will have to apply for an ID card and be placed on the National Identity Register.

Guild president Danielle Grufferty said the move would affect 12% of their students and the Government was trying to bring in ID cards through the back door.

She said: “It will raise the possibility of deportation or having their visa stopped.”

There were also protests in Birmingham, Cardiff, Croydon, Glasgow and Sheffield where international students were also being registered.
