A celebration of art as therapy
AN EXHIBITION of artwork by stroke survivors will be on display at Liverpool Town Hall until the end of the week.
The 100 pictures were all created by members of three art therapy groups in Liverpool, Wirral and Chester.
Many of the 40 or so artists whose work is on display had never painted or shown any artistic ability before suffering a stroke, with some having to learn to paint with their non-dominant hand.
It is the first time the Stroke Association charity has organised such an art exhibition.
Malcolm Lowe, 58, of Bebington, Wirral, who runs the three North West art groups and is himself a stroke survivor, said that art was an excellent way for stroke survivors – particularly those with communication difficulties – to express themselves. He said: “It can give them confidence, friendship, a sense of achievement and a creative and constructive focus for the day. It also offers fun and laughter, and a boost to their egos.
“I’m knocked out by the standard of the works on display.
“Since suffering my stroke 19 years ago, art has become my life. It helps me and it relaxes me.”
Stroke survivors said being a member of an art group had helped them to adapt to their condition
* THE exhibition, Brush Strokes, is on display at Liverpool Town Hall today and tomorrow from 9am to 5pm.
