Veteran councillor’s four decades of service

LIVERPOOL honoured one of its longest-serving councillors last night.

More than 100 guests paid tribute to Cllr Sir Trevor Jones who received an accolade at the Town Hall to acknowledge four decades of service to local government.

Sir Trevor was first elected to the council at a Church Ward by-election in November 1968, later becoming leader of the council and was knighted for his services.

He said: “I’m very surprised at this award. It’s fantastic. My biggest achievement was stopping the M62 at Queen Drive because people wanted it to be longer.

“Lots of people from out of town didn’t like what I did because they want to get in and out of the city. But it was good for Liverpool.

“My biggest regret was not getting the Commonwealth Games. It was going to be where the garden festival was but Manchester got it. But I’ve done my stint and very proud to receive this award.”

Liverpool City Council leader Warren Bradley said: “Sir Trevor fully deserves all the accolades he receives. I would like to thank him for all his help over the years.

“Sir Trevor is someone who is respected across the political spectrum. He is a man of the highest integrity and a fantastic ambassador for Liverpool.”
