Bookies worker stole takings

Liverpool Crown Court

AN ASSISTANT betting shop manager has been jailed for six months after stealing £2,000 from his employer.

Christopher Brown was trusted to bank the takings from the Ladbroke’s shop in Park Road, Toxteth.

But Liverpool Crown Court heard instead of depositing all the cash, he pocketed some for himself.

Michael Scholes, prosecuting, said on October 4, 2006, Brown was supposed to bank £2,532, but only handed over £537.

The 45-year-old father, of Sydenham House, Sefton Park, denied the theft, but was convicted by a jury.

The court heard Brown, who is married with a teenage son, has previous convictions for dishonesty, but had never been behind bars before.

Jailing him, Mr Recorder David Stockdale QC, said: “This was a serious breach of trust.”
