SOME of the finest photographic images of an unforgettable year for Liverpool have been brought together in a unique new collaboration.
Liverpool The Souvenir combines the skills of the Daily Post and Echo’s own photographers with those of the talented amateur snappers of Flickr, the Post’s online photographic group, to document “an amazing city through your eyes”.
Our contributors at Flickr.com have created thousands of memorable images online, leaving no stone of Merseyside life uncovered.
And the best of these images, many from regular contributors, have now been reproduced in a book as a poignant account of 2008, the Capital of Culture year.
Mark Thomas, editor of the Liverpool Daily Post, said: “We have had a fabulous response from local photographers since we set up our Flickr group, and this seemed like the perfect way to celebrate both their efforts and those of our own very talented team of photographers in an incredible year.”
The beauty of the Three Graces and the ever-changing Liverpool skyline feature prominently, including an unusual view of the Liver Building reflected in a rain puddle by Jim McVey.
Photographs reminiscent of war-time capture the excitement and suspense during the arrival of La Princess, the 50ft spider seen by tens of thousands during its journey around the city.
Major events in the cultural calendar, the Chinese New Year, Brouhaha Festival, La Machine and MTV are captured from among the crowds at street level.
Antony Gormley’s Iron Men on Crosby beach are captured over two pages in the book. The six best examples, showing barnacle clad legs and the sun setting over the figures, provide a visual feast courtesy of Ben Levell, Les Auld and others.
The Tall Ships weekend is shown among pages dedicated to the city’s most important feature – the River Mersey.
