Ellen Macarthur prepares to face BBC business dragon

Dame Ellen MacArthur

RECORD-BREAKING yachtswoman Dame Ellen Macarthur could face questions from one of television’s best-known entrepreneurs at an LDP Business Club event this afternoon.

Dame Ellen is speaking at Liverpool’s BT Convention Centre as part of an exclusive event for members of the LDP Business Club.

She will talk about how she became a household name when she broke the world record for sailing non-stop round the world in 2005.

Richard Farleigh, one of the panel on hit BBC TV business show Dragon’s Den, will be among the audience at today’s event, alongside representatives from companies including Alliance and Leicester, Royal Bank of Scotland and glassmaker Pilkington.

Liverpool Daily Post business editor Bill Gleeson said: "Dame Ellen should prove a big draw for our members. She has a vast experience of showing endeavour, resilience and coping with stressful and difficult conditions, a theme which should strike a resonant note with many in business at the moment.

"If you’re looking for inspiration in these testing times, this could be the ideal event to find it."

Dame Ellen is a sustainability ambassador for energy giant E.ON and is backing the company’s campaign to recruit 10,000 energy marshals who can promote green practices at the companies they work for.

E.ON, the sponsor of Dame Ellen’s yachting exploits, has piloted the energy marshal scheme at businesses throughout the UK., and says she believes the scheme is the best way for companies to encourage employees to change their behaviour and embrace energy-efficient practices.

The Carbon Trust estimates such behaviour-changing schemes could save businesses £2.5bn over the next yea, and prevent the emission of 22m tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Mr Farleigh, who made his fortune in hedge funds, was one of the investors on Dragon’s Den in 2006 and 2007.
