Protesters picket Town Hall over culture and leisure cuts

Protestors outside Wallasey Town Hall

AROUND 300 furious protesters demonstrated outside a Wirral Council meeting last night.

They picketed before members of a scrutiny committee discussed the planned closure of dozens of the borough’s cultural and leisure buildings.

They had marched from Guinea Gap Baths, which is among the sites earmarked for closure, to Wallasey Town Hall. Once there, they chanted “Save our leisure centres”, “Save our libraries” and “No more cuts”.

Conservative councillor Chris Blakeley, who saw the protest, said last night: “It was clear that the feeling was running very high.” The protesters filed into the special meeting of the Culture, Tourism and Leisure Overview and Scrutiny Committee, forcing the meeting to be moved from a regular committee room and into the council chamber.

Opponents of the scheme had asked for 11 local forums to be set up to discuss the closures, but the committee voted to open four, one in each Wirral consistency.
