Green Flag unfurled to mark Wirral’s efforts to make better parks

MIKE McCARTNEY joined the Friends of Wirral Country Park for the ceremonial unfurling of the Green Flag, awarded this year.

The Green Flag awards are part of the Government's drive to improve the standards of management and maintenance of parks.

In addition to Wirral Country Park, seven other Wirral sites were also awarded Green Flags this year – Thornton Hough Village Green, Birkenhead Park, Vale Park (New Brighton), Eastham Country Park, Ashton Park, Royden Park and Coronation Gardens (West Kirby).

The Green Flags recognise top- quality parks and green spaces, and winners are judged against stringent assessment criteria.

They need to be welcoming and well- maintained with the support and involvement of the local community.

Cllr Bob Moon, Wirral Council cabinet member for culture, tourism and leisure, said: “It is fantastic that the quality and beauty of Wirral’s parks and countryside areas have been recognised in this way.

“It is a tribute to the hard work and commitment of those responsible for managing and maintaining these facilities.”
