flu jab 100
FLU rates across Liverpool have soared to nearly four times the national average over the last two weeks.
Across the UK, an average of 26 people in every 100,000 are suffering flu, but in Liverpool the primary care trust has seen that rate climb to 103 people per 100,000.
Wirral is also almost double the national average, at 44 per 100,000, with a similar level in parts of Cheshire.
Halton and St Helens and Sefton are also above average, with only Knowsley below the national average at 23.
With flu rates increasing across the region, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) North West is urging eligible people to get the flu jab and for others to protect themselves.
Dr Catherine Quigley, regional epidemiologist with HPA North West, said: “We’re seeing increases in flu in most parts of the region, but particularly in Liverpool, Wirral and parts of Cheshire.
“This is a highly infectious viral illness for which there is no treatment, other than rest and the replacement of fluids.
“Most people who are otherwise fit and healthy will recover quite naturally from a bout of flu.
“However, flu can be serious for older people and for those whose immune systems are suppressed by illness or treatment. I can’t stress enough how important it is for those vulnerable patients to protect themselves by having a flu jab.”
Liverpool is urging all eligible people to get the free flu jab.
Dr Emer Coffey, public health consultant for Liverpool PCT, said: “There is a lot more flu around now in Liverpool compared with this time last year.
“Flu can be a nasty illness for older people and those with chronic medical problems.
