Shopkeepers could face £5,000 fine after being caught selling knives to teenagers

SHOPKEEPERS in Merseyside could face a £5,000 fine after being caught selling knives to teenagers.

Knowsley Council’s latest round of test purchasing operations was carried out by officers from Knowsley’s environmental health team and Merseyside Police on Wednesday evening.

A 14-year-old girl was able to buy a knife block from a store in Prescot, and a cutlery set from a retailer in Huyton.

Both stores will now be the subject of further investigations.

Cllr Ken Keith, Knowsley’s cabinet member for corporate and customer services, said: “It is disappointing some retailers appear to be failing in their responsibility to ensure knives are not sold to young people.”

Anyone caught selling knives to people under 18 faces a fine of up to £5,000 and up to six months’ imprisonment.
