John Lennon's "drunk" recording sell for £24,000

A TAPE recording of a “drunk” John Lennon slurring his way through his version of a rock ’n’ roll song has sold at auction for $36,000 (£24,000).

The cassette, never heard in public, was made in 1973 by the former Beatle during his “lost weekend”, when he substitutes original lyrics with “debauched” amendments.

It was sold as part of a collection of entertainment memorabilia in Los Angeles yesterday.

Lennon sings the 1957 Lloyd Price song, Just Because, in the six-minute recording.

Auction house Bonhams and Butterfields describes the singer as being “drunk”.

The sale catalogue said Lennon interchanged original song lines with “debauched lyrics” which he slurs his way through.

His warblings include: “I wanna take all them new singers, Carol and the other one with the nipples, I wanna take ’em and hold ’em tight.”
