The Bishop and Archbishop of Liverpool send their Christmas message to the people of Merseyside

THE Most Reverend Patrick Kelly, Archbishop of Liverpool.

Liverpool will walk on with hope from its year as European Capital of Culture in the conviction: the secret of the success of 2008 was the spirit which made the city deserve the praise of Jesus: “I was a stranger and you made me welcome”.

The Saviour whose birth we remember this Christmas makes it possible for us to ensure there is room in the inn for those troubled in body, mind, and spirit.

Many will be facing the reality of debt touching families, cities and even countries. There are, though, some good signs: teenagers at Cardinal Heenan High School willing to say to their parents: don’t bother about us, but just the younger ones. Two little boys in the USA making their list, overheard by their parents, saying: “let’s make it shorter this year”. People saying: if there are fewer presents, then find more time for each other. It is certain that to be unselfish is to be blessed and to bless. This can be a very blessed Christmas for us all.
