“The study will be completed in the spring of 2009. The Network Rail route utilisation strategy for the North West, which we published earlier this year, recommends further work over the next five years to increase line speeds on the Chat Moss route between the two cities.
“We are also looking at a complete resignalling scheme for Lime Street station and the railway tracks approaching it.
“This will give us the opportunity of increasing the speed of trains between Edge Hill and Lime Street.”
