Canadian threat to Mersey video game jobs

Testing at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's development centre in Wavertree

Around 1,000 people are employed directly in Merseyside in the games industry, and about 3,000 in the North West.

Last night, Iain Bennett, sector leader of digital and creative industries of the North West Development Agency, said: “There’s real concern. The fact costs are so uneven will draw people out of the UK. Tax breaks are being offered for firms to go to Canada and there are even tax breaks for individuals to move the talent there.”

He said so far Liverpool had managed to hold its own with firms like Sony continuing growth at Wavertree.

There is already evidence the UK is starting to miss out.

Ms Eagle said the Government was looking at what it could do within the scope of a recent decision to allow the French to give tax credits for cultural enterprise, adding: “We will make an announcement when we are able to.”
