Straw in Shields promise

JUSTICE Secretary Jack Straw said he was hoping to resolve whether he would release Michael Shields “as speedily as possible”.

Last month, the High Court ruled that Mr Straw had the “power and jurisdiction” to exercise the ancient “Royal prerogative of mercy” to release the Liverpool FC fan.

But the judges also said it was for Mr Straw alone – not the courts – to decide how to exercise that power.

Mr Straw has appointed a senior barrister to review the case.

He said he was unable to give a time span for a decision.
