Murder manhunt after father dies in street attack

Cllrs Steve Foulkes, George Davies and Denise Roberts said: “The normally quiet and safe village of Claughton has been shocked and horrified by this incident.

“Our community’s first thoughts are with those immediately touched by this tragedy.

“Claughton is a close-knit supportive community where everyone knows each other.

“While the actual circumstances are unclear, the community can rest assured this is not an indication this area is unsafe.

“As local representatives, we stand together with our community in dealing with this terrible incident.

“We would like to thank the police for their heavy presence so as to reassure local people that they are safe.”

Police believe the offender got into a Honda car after the attack and drove towards Bidston Hill. The car has since been recovered.

Ch Supt Jon Ward, Area Commander for Wirral last night warned the public about Finlay: “Merseyside Police must stress that we firmly believe that Gary Finlay may pose a risk to members of the public.

“Enquiries have led us to believe that this was a domestic and targeted incident.

“Forensic examinations were carried out at the scene and house-to-house inquiries were conducted in the area.” A post mortem to establish the cause of death was being carried out last night.

Finlay is described as a white, 5ft 8in tall, stocky build, with blue eyes.

He is balding and was last seen wearing a black and dark grey padded jacket.

He has links to the Prenton area and also to the South West of England.

Members of the public are advised not to approach him, but if anyone does see him they should report the sighting to their nearest police station.
