Graham McKenna: Tributes to father stabbed to death

TRIBUTES were paid last night to a “loving father” and “outstanding soldier”, who was stabbed to death in a Wirral domestic attack.

Graham McKenna, 45, died in hospital after he and his 14-year-old son, Michael, were stabbed in the abdomen on Upton Road, Claughton, on Saturday.

Michael’s condition was described as serious but stable last night.

Police launched a manhunt on Sunday to catch suspect Gary Finlay, who is thought to be an estranged family relation of Mr McKenna.

Police say there have been “incidents” between the pair in the past and they are investigating why any bad feeling may have developed between the two.

Last night, his family and Army colleagues described a devoted father and committed serviceman.

A family statement said: “Graham was a loving husband and father of two children, Michael, 14 and Amy, 19.

“He was a lifelong Everton supporter who attended every home game with his son Michael – something they were both looking forward to on Saturday.

“Graham and Michael were walking to catch a bus to Goodison when they were targeted in this cowardly attack.

“Our whole family has been left devastated at the loss of a wonderful husband, son, father, brother, uncle and cousin.

“Graham was well-respected within the local community and was liked by everyone he met.

“He was a quiet and thoughtful gentleman who will be missed by everyone who knew him.”

Mr McKenna served for over 20 years as a Regular soldier in The 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment. ŠHe then became a TA soldier, initially serving with 107 Field Squadron, based in Birkenhead, but later transferred to be an instructor, based at Altcar.ŠHe held the rank of Corporal.
