The University of Liverpool _100x200
“We are dismayed at the university’s recent tendency to circumvent established structures and procedures in pushing the plan through.”
In an interview with the Daily Post in November last year about his appointment, Sir Howard, said: “While I’m keeping the same priorities, inevitably you also have to find a new direction as we’re working in a very, very competitive world.
“We have great strengths in subjects such as medicine and engineering, but we’re competing globally in terms of research not only within the UK, but also in the US and Far East.”
Sir Howard took up his post in September last year and was criticised by trade unions for appointing his wife, Sheila Newby, as assistant vice-chancellor.
A spokeswoman for the university said: “Like all universities, Liverpool will be looking closely at the results of the research exercise, but we have no plans to focus the university on the sciences.”
