Decision day approaches for Liverpool Royal Court design

SEVEN designs short-listed for a planned overhaul of Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre are being unveiled today.

The landmark art deco venue, which stands next to Queen Square Bus Station in Roe Street, is to undergo a multi-million pound transformation.

The seven designs, which have been selected from about 50, will be on display to the public at St George’s Hall from tomorrow and were today being exhibited in a special truck parked on St George’s Plateau.

Among the final seven designs are entries from two Liverpool firms: Union North Architects, in Hope Street, and Studio Three Architects, of Fleet Street.

The other five on the shortlist are London firms Burrell Foley Fischer, Pentagram and AHMM; Glasgow’s Nord Architects and Studio Andrew Todd from Paris. The founder of the Paris-based studio has relatives in Liverpool.

Each of the chosen designs aims to modernise the existing building without changing its 1930s identity.

A spokesman for the Royal Court said: “We want to bring the Royal Court more up-to-date so it both fits into its surroundings and stands out more. It’s a 1930s building in the midst of more modern architecture.

“We want to achieve the update while preserving the existing building’s character.
